The Leyland Company built lorries to comply with British War Office specifications and subsidies by the government. The Leyland lorry, because of this link, was usially referred to as the R.A.F. Type Leyland. Almost 5,000 lorries, complete with solid tyres were built to this model's specification and many of these saw active service with the British Forces in France.
After the end of World War I, more than 3,000 of these lorries were returned and reconditioned for sale to civilian users. Leyland continued to manufacture the model during the 1920's and many were still in use at the beginning of World War II, some of the later vehicles were by then upadted with pneumatic tyres. The Leyland lorry was powered by a six cylinder engine developing 36 bhp at 1,000 rpm which enabled this classic vehicle to achieve a speed of 15-20 mph with a fuel consumption of 7 mpg.
This model is an exact replica of the Leyland 3 ton lorry in authenic livery. The production of this model has been restricted to this Special Edition only. This model will never be reproduced and the moulds will be destroyed after the production of the 40,000th model.

Leyland Motors Limited has been an English truck builder since 1896. Originally established as the Lancaster Steam Motor Company, it built steam powered vehicles. The name Leyland originated in 1907 when the company Coulthards from Preston was taken over. This company built steam trucks. From 1905, the construction of trucks that ran on petrol was started. The subsidy trucks were trucks for the British army.

The (Y9-3) 1920 Leyland 3-ton Subsidy Lorry joined the range in 1985 in the livery of the company of 'A. Luff & Sons Ltd' landscape gardeners. A very controversial model when it came out due to the way it was sold. The model was cast from 'soft tooling'. The moulds were never hardened so once used they were useless again and this was part of the deal that it would only ever be issued once in limited quantities.
The Leyland was packaged in a nice shiny box with gold foil lettering which had a sticker with a unique "Limited Edition" number. How many was limited was hard to figure out as the codes used did not run sequentially.
